About Submittals

A submittal is something the contractor sends for approval before it is built or installed — shop drawings, product data, samples, calculations. Submittals hang off the specification they answer to, which is what makes "everything outstanding against 09 21 16" a question you can ask.

This topic includes:

The submittals list

The submittals list Submittal items, each against a specification section, with the manager and the responsible contractor.

Items, packages and revisions

  • An item is one thing being submitted, against one spec section.
  • A package groups items that travel together for review.
  • A revision is a resubmission. The revision number rises; the history stays.

Each item records a type — Shop Drawings, Product Data, Samples, Calculations — a manager, a responsible contractor, a priority and a due date.

Statuses

Draft, Required, Open, Closed and Void. Required is the useful one at the start of a job: it lets you build the register of everything the specification demands before any of it has been sent.

Tip: create the Required items from the specification first. The submittal register then doubles as the checklist of what is still owed.
